Linda Yueh, Chief Business Correspondent at the BBC

On 8 February, OxWIB welcomed Linda Yueh, BBC's Chief Business Correspondent, who was fresh off the heels of the World Economics Forum in Davos, Switzerland. There, Dr. Yueh hosted a special edition of her show Talking Business with Linda Yueh, discussing 'gender-driven growth' with Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde, UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, and Nissan-Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn. Dr. Yueh shared some tidbits from their discussion with OxWIB members, offering insights into how the gender pay gap might be closed and how women can take on leadership roles in the global economy. She pointed out that companies with women on their boards outperform those that do not. The primary suggestion from the panelists at Davos points to a need to measure and increase the numbers of women across the spectrum. Rather than simply focusing on raw numbers, companies should focus on ensuring that women succeed at every level. Women should hold positions as managers, directors, and executives. Dr. Yueh also offered advice on how women can succeed in male-dominated professions. She pointed out that every panelist at Davos has experienced or witnessed gender discrimination at some point in their careers, yet were never deterred by those negative experiences. When asked for her best piece of advice for women hoping to succeed in business, Dr. Yueh, who has also worked as an attorney and an economist, told OxWIB members that when entering a meeting, they should always be sure to take a seat at the table.
